Red Notice Review: 5 Ups & 5 Downs

3. Ryan Reynolds Basically Plays Himself (Again)

As surprising as this might sound, Ryan Reynolds is actually the weak link of the focal acting trio this time around.

While Gal Gadot is clearly having a blast as the slippery criminal mastermind The Bishop and Dwayne Johnson's role as clumsy FBI profiler John Hartley feels a parody of his Hobbs character in the Fast and Furious franchise, Reynolds is basically just playing the same old charming rogue he always does.

Reynolds' notorious art thief Nolan Booth is the same quippy motor-mouth smart-a** archetype he's mastered playing over his career, but honestly, it's starting to wear a little thin at this point.

This isn't to say Reynolds doesn't bring some quick-witted laughs on occasion, but having him more-or-less play himself yet again only compounds how calculatedly safe and straight-forward the entire movie feels.

Someone needs to cast Reynolds as the savage villain in a movie quick, because he's running the risk of becoming a one-trick pony if he keeps this up.
