Red Sparrow Review: 5 Ups & 5 Downs

5. Jennifer Lawrence's Compelling Performance

Red Sparrow Jennifer Lawrence
Fox

Jennifer Lawrence gets a disproportionate amount of hate online considering she's one of the more reliable young A-listers working today, and while the movie certainly could've offered her more to work with, she acquits herself admirably here with another totally rock solid performance.

Her Russian accent is what it is - it's mostly fine, and just about any major Hollywood star sounds ridiculous even trying it - but Lawrence commits herself physically to the edgier and more emotionally demanding aspects of the part, selling the visceral toll deep-cover espionage will take on a soul.

J-Law fans will certainly get plenty of movie for their buck, even if it's a shame that Dominika still feels like a bit of a hollow shell by the time the film wraps up.
