Constantin Film has revealed the leading cast members of their upcoming reboot of the Resident Evil film franchise. The eighth live-action film based on the long-running survival horror video game series, the as-yet untitled film will be a reboot of the series, entirely separated from the Milla Jovovich-starring vehicles that were released between 2002 and 2016.

The cast will star Kaya Scodelario (Skins, The Maze Runner, Crawl) as Claire Redfield, Hannah John-Kamen (Tomb Raider, Ant-Man and the Wasp, Ready Player One) as Jill Valentine, Robbie Amell (The Babysitter, The Flash, Upload) as Chris Redfield, Tom Hopper (Merlin, The Umbrella Academy, Terminator Dark Fate) as Albert Wesker, Avan Jogia (Victorius, Zombieland: Double Tap, Now Apocalypse) as Leon S. Kennedy, and Neal McDonough (Captain America: The First Avenger, Yellowstone, Sonic the Hedgehog) as William Birkin.

English filmmaker Johannes Roberts, whose previous credits include the horror films The Strangers: Prey at Night and 47 Meters Down, is attached as writer-director. In a statement he made to Deadline, he said he aimed to "re-create the terrifying visceral experience I had when I first played them whilst at the same time telling a grounded human story about a small dying American town that feels both relatable and relevant to today’s audiences."

The same article states the film will be a more faithful adaptation of the first two games of the series, set in Racoon City in 1998 (the year of Resident Evil 2's release).

The reboot was first announced in 2017 by Constantin chairman Martin Moszkowicz. James Wan was at one time attached to write and produce, but left the project to work on the upcoming Mortal Kombat film. Roberts' involvement was first announced in December 2018.

Like the previous films, it is being produced by German-based studio Constantin Film and distributed stateside by Screen Gems. The producers are Moszkowicz, James Harris, Hartley Gorenstein, Victor Hadida, Alex Zhang, Dylan Tarason, Alex Westmore, Colin Scully, and Robert Kulzer - several of whom are veterans of the film franchise.

No other information regarding filming locations or dates have been disclosed. The film is tentatively set for a 2021 release date.
