2. Andy Millman - Extras

The second of Gervais and Stephen Merchant’s BBC classics, Extras had much bigger goals than The Office, and that gave its star a much bigger, more complex role to play - across the two seasons and a special Andy Millman evolved from a background artist to a struggling creative, then a snobbish celeb and ultimately repentant friend. Each stage of his rise and fall was superbly realised, with a real poignancy to his struggle for something he couldn’t quite define.

At the end of the day, though, the best bits came in reaction to the celeb guests. Just look at his stone-faced disbelief at Ian McKellen’s acting lessons or Patrick Stewart’s passion project.
