Robert Downey Jr: 5 Awesome Performances And 5 That Sucked

5 Performances That Sucked

5. Billy Covington - Air America (1990)

America035 The remarkable thing about Robert Downey Jr. is that, no matter what he does, there's something inherently watchable about him: that's to say, there are very few "dud" performances admist his filmography because he's such a natural talent. There are, however, a few performances which don't quite work. Here's one of them, courtesy of a little-known movie about two pilots flying contraband during the Vietnam war. It's called Air America. I doubt you've even heard of it, right? This movie pairs up the immensely likeable duo of Mel Gibson and Downey Jr., so it's a shame they both seem totally bored all the way. Though there are hints of the Downey Jr. we know and love, ultimately the film just feels too much like a paycheck opportunity for both actors - there's a sense that our leads are merely counting down the days 'til they can get their money and get out. We do have Air America to thank for introducing Gibson to Downey, though: Gibson was fundamental in bringing his friend out of alcoholism and drug abuse and back into the limelight.
