Robert Duvall: 5 Awesome Performances And 5 That Sucked

4. Jim Caldwell - Jayne Mansfield's Car

More often than not, an actor will turn in a poor performance because the film they've agreed to be a part of hasn't given them anything consistent to work with. That's what happened with Robert Duvall and Jayne Mansfield's Car, an annoyingly over-plotted bore that wastes an awesome cast because it doesn't really know what it wants to say. Written and directed by none other than Billy Bob Thornton, it's just a mess. Duvall plays a World War I veteran whose family is caught in a culture clash with their next door neighbours, and physically he looks the part (sorry, Robert). Unfortunately, the performance just isn't there, and there are moments in which Duvall looks completely unsure as to whether or not he knows what he's actually saying - as if the script doesn't matter. And to be totally honest, it doesn't. A complete waste of a great actor, this.
