Robin Williams: 5 Awesome Performances & 5 That Sucked

2. Reverend Frank - License To Wed (2007)

Williams was at his best when he was given complex characters who mixed vulnerability and emotional wounds with his typical brand of comedy, and he was at his worst when he was playing flashy, unfunny caricatures who popped up in supporting roles and who should have been played by someone like Martin Short. Like his "funny because he's foreign" doctor in Nine Months, that's very much the problem with this insipid, unfunny performance in an equally off-putting bland and mirthless comedy from Dunston Checks In director Ken Kwapis. It's a total waste of his comic talents: poor writing, no jokes to speak of and a performance that seemingly endorses the comedy as if it's somehow on a par with the best material Williams ever got to play with. Perhaps it's cruel to castigate because of commitment to poor quality material, but this is not a one off by any means and it is demonstrative of some of the bigger problems with his career as a whole.
