Rocketman Review: 8 Ups & 2 Downs

4. Dexter Fletcher's Creative & Intelligent Direction

Rocketman Taron Egerton
Paramount Pictures

Rocketman certainly could've been a totally straight-forward biopic with a great central performance, but Dexter Fletcher dares to take things further with his silky smooth direction throughout.

Whether providing tight, intimate coverage to the film's many affecting dialogue sequences or dynamically darting the camera about during a musical set-piece, he has a strong eye for film grammar and ensures there's never a dull moment.

The shot selections never feel hackneyed or obvious, and it's clear that a great amount of care has been taken to make the film a rich sensory experience.

If Rocketman is as commercially successful as it deserves to be, this could be the film to truly put Fletcher on the map.
