Ryan Gosling: 5 Awesome Performances And 5 That Sucked

1. David Marks - All Good Things

It sounds silly, I know, but All Good Things almost ruined movies for me, as for a while after seeing this film, I was nervous that any other feature I watched would be as terrible as this one. Following a similar format as Blue Valentine, and taking place over a seemingly endless period of time, this is one of those pictures with dreadfully unlikable characters, a terrible plot (based on a true story or not), and an overly long running time. The basic premise deals with Gosling's David Marks, the son of a real estate mogul, and the terrible relationship he has with his wife Katie, who eventually goes missing at some point during this horrid film. The cast is phenomenal, yes, but the performances simply aren't up to scratch, and you should undoubtedly take my advice, and avoid this film at all costs. It's almost baffling that Gosling made this film between Blue Valentine and Crazy, Stupid, Love, given how exceptional those two were, and most criminally of all, this is a case of a subtle character eluding the actor. He is given a barren brief for the character, and for once fails to bring that intangible essence that have made so many of his more nuanced roles so engaging. And though we could use the quality of the film as an excuse here, this is one of the few times when Gosling is easily the worst thing about the whole project.
