Sam Raimi Could Bring ANOTHER Spider-Man Actor Back For Doctor Strange 2

MCU Phase 4 could be about to get VERY groovy.

Out of all the films that are coming as a part of the MCU's hotly anticipated fourth phase, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is the one that's seemingly generating the most buzz. This is in spite of the fact that director Scott Derrickson departed the project earlier this year due to "creative differences", which - if you've been keeping up with Marvel Studios over the last ten or so years - you'll know has become a frustratingly regular occurrence.

On the upside - and this is with all due respect to Derrickson's previous work - the change in director may have just have worked to Marvel's benefit. Hollywood trades reported back in February that Evil Dead and Spider-Man director Sam Raimi was now taking charge of the project in the wake of Derrickson's departure, with Raimi having now confirmed in a conversation with Collider this week that he is in fact attached to the sequel.

"I loved Doctor Strange as a kid, but he was always after Spider-Man and Batman for me, he was probably at number five for me of great comic book characters. He was so original, but when we had that moment in Spider-Man 2 I had no idea that we would ever be making a Doctor Strange movie, so it was really funny to me that coincidentally that line [when the Daily Bugle staff suggest Doctor Strange as a name for Otto Octavius] was in the movie. I gotta say I wish we had the foresight to know that I was going to be involved in the project."

Confirmation of Raimi's involvement is sure to get fans excited, but something even cooler happened shortly after the story went live. Frequent Raimi collaborator Bruce Campbell took to Twitter overnight to quote Collider's story, teasing fans by saying that "there must be SOME character to challenge the good Doctor...", potentially hinting at a role in the upcoming film.

Could Campbell be involved? It's certainly possible. His last superhero role was Spider-Man 3, and with the next Strange film set to tackle the multiverse, wouldn't it be great to see him reprise one of those cameos from that trilogy? It's also worth noting how Campbell was set to play Mysterio in Raimi's cancelled fourth Spider-Man film, before Sony opted to pursue a reboot with director Marc Webb. Could we see an alternate take on the character a few years after Spider-Man: Far From Home?

Shifting direction to more substantial roles, it might even be possible that Campbell could portray the likes of either Nightmare or Mephisto, both of whom are heavily rumoured to have a role in the sequel. The former is the ruler of the Dream Dimension, while the latter is basically the devil. (Related note, Campbell in a jazzy red suit hamming it up as Satan himself? Yes please.)

It's too early to tell if Campbell's tease will lead to anything substantial, but here's hoping it does.
