Scream Review: 6 Ups & 4 Downs

5. David Arquette Steals The Show

Of the series' three major legacy characters, Dewey is by far the one best-serviced in this new movie, getting a generous amount of screen time as the washed-up, strung-out former sheriff dragged back into the field when another Ghostface emerges.

This is easily David Arquette's best work playing Dewey, as he evolves from a quasi-joke character into a genuinely well-realised person with palpable, relatable emotions about where he's landed in his life.

Though Dewey gets a generally more serious-minded treatment in this installment, that's not to say he isn't party to some funny moments too, and Arquette of course knows how to nail the tone either way.

Arquette certainly gives the strongest and most evocative performance in the film, and unlike Gale and Sid, Dewey actually feels like a totally necessary piece of the puzzle.
