Scream Review: 6 Ups & 4 Downs

3. The New Cast Kills It

It's always a concern with legacy sequels that the new younger cast simply won't cut it, but thankfully Scream's cast of new victims are for the most part pretty great.

The clear standouts among the pack are Jenna Ortega as protagonist Sam's (Melissa Barrera) sister Tara, Jack Quaid as Sam's exasperated older boyfriend Richie, and perhaps best of all Jasmin Savoy Brown as Randy's niece Mindy, who is basically exactly what you'd expect Randy's niece to be in the best way possible.

While it'd be practically impossible for the new cast to live up to the iconic original set, they certainly feel fleshed out as distinct characters in their own right, no matter that some of them are clearly designed as modern updates of the originals.
