Despite being a man renowned for tough, intense performances sprinkled with hair-tingling humility, it's worth remembering that Sean Justin Penn's Tinseltown calling card was a brief role in TV Western, Little House On The Prairie. Track forward four decades and he's part of the Hollywood elite, a champion of great causes, with two Oscars to his name and an award-winning director in his own right. Suffice to say, he more than deserves to be recognised as one of the best actors of his generation. Like any other thesps of Penn€™s calibre, there are roles that will garner the plaudits and groans in equal measure. While he may have avoided some of the career-denting duds that a number of his co stars on this list have put us through €“ De Niro. Fearless Leader. The horror €“ there are a few blots on his filmography that are deserved of mention. With the The Gunman due today, a film that sees Penn flex his muscles as well as his acting skills in his first action role, this feature aims to celebrate the great performances that he will be remembered for, along with those that fell short of the mark and, well, sucked.
