Sean Penn: 5 Awesome Performances And 5 That Sucked

2. Glendon Wasey - Shanghai Surprise

Hollywood is famed for rolling out misfiring husband and wife cinematic outings; but if you think Tom and Nicole were bad in Far And Away, Liz and Dick were unbelievable in Cleopatra or even Sly and Brigitte a tad OTT in Cobra, these pompous pair ups are nothing compared to Madonna and Penn in Shanghai Surprise. Addressing the 1,000lb opium haul in the room, Penn's performance as chancer Glendon Wasey in this wartime crime caper is bad. He may not have taken home the Razzie like Madge did, but his uneven performance - part Indiana Jones, the other frat boy - fits pretty snugly into a film that, like its two leads, may be pretty to look at, sure as heckfire isn't a whole lot of fun to watch. Having starred in what can astutely be described as the Howard The Duck of the adventure comedy movie, Penn thankfully managed to dust himself off from this one and go on to forge a career in Hollywood.
