The trailers for the recent remake of Silent Night, Deadly Night suggested it was a pretty straight-up re-do of the original seasonal slasher flick, though kept one big surprise under wraps until release.

The remake actually has a secret supernatural element that wasn't present in the 1984 original at all, that Billy Chapman (Rohan Campbell) is guided to kill by the voice of Charlie (Mark Acheson) - the man who killed Billy's parents when he was a child.

As Charlie dies following the attack, an electrical surge seemingly transports Charlie's essence into young Billy, and as an adult Charlie compels him to kill "naughty" people in the lead-up to Christmas.

Because this isn't wild enough, when Billy dies at the end of the film, he manages to transfer his own essence into his lover Pam (Ruby Modine), becoming a voice in her head as she seemingly carries on his killer legacy.

Considering the original Silent Night, Deadly Night is hardly a hallowed text, there's absolutely nothing wrong with this gonzo twist on the original formula, unexpected though it undeniably was.
