12. Charlie Was The Mastermind - Now You See Me, Now You Don't
It just wouldn't be a Now You See Me movie without a bonkers final plot twist, would it?
Even with fans being primed to expect a third act "gotcha!" by this point, who among us predicted that young new illusionist Charlie (Justice Smith) would be the mastermind behind the movie's events?
As it turns out, Charlie reveals himself to be the secret half-brother of villain Veronika Vanderberg (Rosamund Pike), who as a result of her father's affair attempted to murder Charlie and his mother by cutting the brakes on her car.
Though Charlie's mother died, she saved Charlie in her final act, and he's since devoted his life to plotting her comeuppance, even posing as the Eye to enlist the Horsemen to help him.
Ultimately Veronika is arrested while Charlie vows to chase down the criminals she's helped launder money, while also returning the proceeds of her diamond trade back to the people of South Africa.
This twist worked perfectly, honestly, and it hinged entirely around the casting of Justice Smith, who simply doesn't have the leading man energy you'd expect from a master schemer, allowing him to hide in plain sight.
