Skyfall: 4 Mistakes That Made It Miss The Mark

3. The Inexplicable Villain

Javier Bardem€™s opening rat analogy trod the line of interesting, it was fun to watch him work and hear the set-up for what Bond€™s terrible €˜Baddie killer€™ line was going to be, and despite the obvious attempt to bring in something of the Joker school of maniacal villain who is quite incomprehensible yet brilliant, instead they just hit a mismatch of ideas that fail to nail just what the point in this character is. First he€™s flamboyant, carefree and a potential homosexual with a mean streak. Then he€™s quite deranged. Then he€™s a stoic killer who pauses before his moment of glory. Then a war chief throwing grenades around and finally someone embracing suicide. Eh? Many people applaud Bardem€™s performance, I just find it successful in the sense he manages to handle such a poorly written character who never appears to be going anywhere.
