3. The Inexplicable Villain
Javier Bardems opening rat analogy trod the line of interesting, it was fun to watch him work and hear the set-up for what Bonds terrible Baddie killer line was going to be, and despite the obvious attempt to bring in something of the Joker school of maniacal villain who is quite incomprehensible yet brilliant, instead they just hit a mismatch of ideas that fail to nail just what the point in this character is. First hes flamboyant, carefree and a potential homosexual with a mean streak. Then hes quite deranged. Then hes a stoic killer who pauses before his moment of glory. Then a war chief throwing grenades around and finally someone embracing suicide. Eh? Many people applaud Bardems performance, I just find it successful in the sense he manages to handle such a poorly written character who never appears to be going anywhere.
