Skyfall Review: 12 Reasons Why It's Awesome

11. Roger Deakins' Cinematography

Roger Deakins might be the best cinematographer alive today; he has enjoyed a lengthy tenure as the Coen Brothers' go-to DP, and has racked up a stunning 9 Oscar nominations, yet incredulously hasn't won yet. Even though he'll face stiff competition from Mihai Malaimare Jr - whose exemplary lensing on The Master makes him a front-runner in the category - this could be Deakins' year, for his work here makes Skyfall easily the most visually striking of all the Bond films. The above Shanghai sequence in particular really sparkles, reminiscent of the Hong Kong segment in The Dark Knight, if boasting a whole lot more neon.
