Skyscraper Review: 5 Ups & 5 Downs

3. The Amputee Action Hero Is An Interesting & Inclusive Touch

Skyscraper Dwayne Johnson
Universal

The least generic thing about Skyscraper is the fact that Johnson's protagonist is an amputee, having lost one of his legs in a hostage rescue gone wrong years prior.

While it's a pleasantly inclusive touch to have a big-budget Hollywood movie headlined by an amputee character - even if he's played by an actor of The Rock's incredible stature - what's more impressive is that it's not just a gimmick that the movie lingers on excessively.

The fact that Johnson's character has a prosthetic leg is barely ever addressed by any of the film's characters, and though a few sequences do involve use of the limb, it never feels like the movie is either making a joke out of it or trying to score easy PR points.

Basically, it feels like a natural facet of the character that isn't made a big deal of, and that's probably the most accepting and forward-thinking thing the movie could've done.
