Solo: A Star Wars Story - 52 Easter Eggs & References Explained

51. "I Have A Thermal Detonator"

Star Wars Return Of The Jedi Thermal Detonator
Lucasfilm

During Han Solo's opening scheme, he finds himself cornered by the worm-like Lady Proxima (Linda Hunt), and in an attempt to safely remove himself from the situation, declares that he has a thermal detonator.

Proxima sees through his ruse, though, noting that he's just holding a rock and making clicking noises with his mouth, but Han has other plans. He hurls the rock through a nearby window, causing sunlight to flood the room and violently burn Proxima, allowing him and Qi'ra to make their escape.

This is a clear callback to Return of the Jedi, where Leia (Carrie Fisher) disguises herself as bounty hunter Boushh and confronts Jabba the Hutt. When Jabba asks why he should pay Boushh, "Boussh" pulls out a thermal detonator and C-3PO (Anthony Daniels) memorably quips, "Because he's holding a thermal detonator!"
