Sonic The Hedgehog Review: 6 Ups & 4 Downs

3. Too Many Humans, Not Enough Sonic

This was always likely to be an issue in a live-action Sonic movie, and as expected, the film pays a little too much attention to its relatively forgettable human characters, sometimes at the expense of Sonic himself.

James Marsden is perfectly likeable in the role of human protagonist Tom Wachowski, though the film wastes at least a scene or two too many indulging in his personal melodrama, which results in Sonic occasionally spending more time off-screen than he probably should.

When you factor in that Tom has a wife (Tika Sumpter), and several scenes are also focused on his sister-in-law and her daughter, the balance feels a little uneven in favour of the humans, possibly in order to keep the movie's budget down.
