Spectre: 9 Simple Fixes That Would've Made It Awesome
7. Get Someone To Remix Sam Smith's Opening Song
It's been done to death, I know, but Writing's On The Wall feels less like a Bond theme song than a Sam Smith album track written after he'd half-watched Octopussy while doing the ironing. He says it took 20 minutes to write, and you can tell. Sweeping strings and diva-ish bellowing are the generally agreed MO of a solid Bond tune, but after Adele, the current holder of the world's biggest diva mantle, ramped that up to the nth degree with Skyfall to magnificent effect there wasn't much point doing the same thing again. Why not do something different? We've not had a proper hands-in-the-lasers, third-degree-gurns type Bond tune in a very long time. In fact, the closest we've ever had was Duran Duran's A View To A Kill, and that ruined the whole thing by concluding its video with the singer going, "The names Bon - Simon Le Bon". So, get some hip knob-twiddler to stick a 303 on it, loop the "always hit the floor" line, work up some atmospheric electronica wiggles and squiggles, ratchet the BPM up to 125 and hey presto: it's bangers o'clock. Bond's swinging from the rafters somewhere in Berghain, and everyone's pumped.
