Spectre Ending: 8 Potential Ways It Sets Up Bond 25
7. Will Madeline Survive?
I thought Lea Seydoux was pretty great as Madeline Swann, her mixture of sultry confidence and shaky emotion more than making up for some rather underwritten plot beats (when exactly did she have time to fall in "love" with James?). She very much fits the broad modern Bond girl archetype (a conversational match and capable of handling herself to a degree), but the ending means she could actually be pretty ground-breaking; she'll be the first to ever return in another film. How big a part she'll have in Bond 25 will depend entirely on what the creatives (probably Neal Purvis and Robert Wade on scripting duties, but no more Sam Mendes) want to do with her. Given how interesting a character/actress combo they were, it'd certainly be exciting to have her play a large part in the film, giving us a second protagonist and for once an extended look at a monogamous Bond. The Man From U.N.C.L.E. this summer vastly changed the TV show state when they expanded the central duo to a trio and made Alicia Vikander's Gaby a key member of the team, and such mixing up of a well-worn formula may be an approach for 007 to try. Still, that requires a franchise that hasn't messed with its foundations for over fifty years demolishing and redefining what a Bond movie is, so it's hardly to be expected. I wouldn't be surprised if she instead met a fate similar to Diana Rigg's Tracy in Bond 25, possibly killed near the start in a mirror of OHMSS and giving Bond the push to return to MI6 and take vengeance on Blofeld.
