Spectre Reviews: 11 Early Reactions You Need To Know

3. There's A "Hugely Controversial" Plot Twist

MGM were very strict with the press regarding spoilers for the film's production, and to be fair to them, the majority of reviewers have been incredibly careful not to let anything significant slip. It has been confirmed in some reviews, though, that the film has a major plot twist, one which The Shiznit called both "franchise-defining" and "hugely controversial". The Independent meanwhile said that some of the reveals "wouldn€™t be out of place in an old Edgar Wallace B thriller". Whether this relates to the identity of Waltz's villain or the hints in the trailer that the plot figures heavily in Bond's past, many critics suggested that the reveal is certain to be divisive, especially among long-time Bond fans. Considering that some reviews criticised the film's fleshing out of Bond's back story, perhaps they were subtly trying to criticise the twist without drawing overt attention to it in their critiques. Or perhaps it's all the ambivalence to the Oberhauser character, who is sure to frustrate whether or not he is in fact Blofeld. If there's any franchise that really doesn't need to force a twist on its audience, it's Bond.
