Spider-Man: Far From Home - The Real Meaning Behind Nick Fury's Secret
1. How Could S.W.O.R.D. Feature In Phase Four?
And now the biggie. Phase Four was already shaping up to be something massive but both of Far From Home's post-credits have completely changed the game - not just for Spider-Man, but the series' entire landscape as well.
Marvel's decision to divest from S.H.I.E.L.D. in Captain America: The Winter Soldier was hailed as a major game-changer at the time, and for good reason. The organisation were a staple of the MCU since 2008, but the reveal that it was actually an outlet for Hydra forced Nick Fury to reassess his role. He changed for the better.
The reintroduction of a similar organisation could be seen as something of a step back, but there's nothing wrong with a little bit of structure. Remember, S.H.I.E.L.D. didn't venture out into space to attempt intergalactic diplomacy - that is the unique purview of S.W.O.R.D.
Rumours indicate that Captain Marvel 2 will continue its prequel setting, but there's still a chance that the organisation could crop up there too. Building upon their relationship in the comics, that film could also build the foundations of Carol Danvers' tense alliance with Agent Brand, and when you factor Fury into things too, you're left with a bunch of different voices deciding how best to navigate this new, post-Endgame landscape.
For many, though, the fact that S.W.O.R.D. have crossed paths with the X-Men more than most will be the most exciting aspect of their potential arrival. With them in hand, Marvel have the opportunity to dive into a world of Celestials, Eternals, Deviants, and the origins of humans in the MCU. There are a whole host of things Fury could be up to, and with Kree sleeper cells apparently a thing too, it's likely the MCU will be counting on S.W.O.R.D's services in the years to come. Here's hoping we learn more in the months ahead.
