Zendaya's Michelle is a hysterical - if a little underused - character, who snarks from the side-lines, questioning modern schooling conventions (like celebrating monuments built by slavery) and generally being a delightful malcontent. She's basically the John Hughes basket-case archetype, without the negative connotations.

During the first shots of Peter at school when he tells Ned about the Civil War mission, she can be seen in the background reading a copy of W Somerset Maugham's Of Human Bondage. That's a notable book because it's a story about a young man whose parents die and who is sent to live with his aunt and uncle as he struggles to find his calling.
