The exchange between Iron Man and Spider-Man that sees the former take back his hi-tech suit as punishment for Spider-Man almost getting lots of people killed on the Staten Island ferry is very definitely a call-back to Iron Man's own past.

He says:

"If you're nothing without that suit then you shouldn't have it".

That is wisdom that Tony earned in Iron Man 3, which essentially taught him that he's more than just his suits, and which called back to The Avengers when Cap challenged him with his "big man in a suit of armor, take that off and what are you?" line.

That might have led to his infamous "genius, billionaire, playboy philanthropist" line, but it obviously stuck with him.
