Spider-Man Homecoming Confirmed, May Include Vulture

An old villain for a new Spidey...

In a not at all surprising move, Marvel and Sony have confirmed the title of the upcoming MCU Spider-Man movie as Spider-Man Homecoming. This comes a short time after it was basically spoiled by them registering the URL, and they've released a logo to herald the news.

Personally, I hate the logo for all but two things. The little Spidey posing as the "o" is a nice little touch, and the fact that it says Marvel at the top there and not Sony is a great thing for everyone. And at least there's absolutely no way we're going to get a needlessly dark film with a logo like that.

Whether it follows the 1984 comic of the same name in any substantial way remains to be seen, but it certainly fits with the idea of Spidey returning to his own "job" after teaming up for an ensemble event.

As for the big rumour, according to Birth Movies Death, Homecoming will follow Sam Raimi's intended plans for Spider-Man 4 and bring in the Vulture (who was also widely expected to appear in the Amazing Spider-Man franchise too).

According to Devin Faraci, the villain will actually only be a supporting figure in the film - in his words a "non-main villain" - so we're likely to get another big bad. Could it be that Vulture is merely the opening act hurdle? It's not like this is going to be an origin movie, so Spidey is now fully operational and having a big set-piece to open would fit Marvel's usual model for sequels.

A few eyebrows may be raised at Vulture - and in particular the massive age gap between hero and villain - but the winged foe offers further opportunity for Marvel to show off their web-slinging effects, which Faraci - and other critics who've seen it already - say they've absolutely nailed in Captain America: Civil War. So you can see the thinking behind it.
