Spike Lee is to helm
L.A. Riots, a racially charged drama set in around the infamous riots of April 1992. The riots in question followed after a predominately white jury acquitted four police offers who were videotaped brutually beating black motorist Rodney King. The riots led to the death of 55 people with many more injured and caused over $1 billion in damages. Lee had this to say to the site...
"This isn't about some cavalcade of stars, but rather a truthful and realistic examination of what happened, what the ramifications were and where we are now, in hopes that something like this doesn't happen again," The quote above suggests that he may push for unknown actors to star in the movie, so audiences won't be distracted by the familair faces they see on screen and can instead loose themselves in the re-telling of this true event. Should be powerful stuff then. I had thought that the director had moved on from these racially charged movies but obviously he believes he hasn't said everyone about the subject that needs to be said.
Variety are also reporting that this is likely to be his next film, so the development of the
Inside Man sequel will continue but won't be filmed until at least L.A. Riots has wrapped. source -
