Star Trek: 10 Secrets Of The First Contact Fleet
1. Lost With All Hands
You may have noticed that, while the Akira, Steamrunner, and Saber-classe starships made the transition from the big screen to the small one (i.e. from Star Trek: First Contact to Star Treks Deep Space Nine and Voyager), there was one notable absence: Alex Jaeger's Norway-class.
A few different stories for why this ship never appeared again after Star Trek: First Contact have floated around for years... from ILM's file for the ship being accidentally lost to the CGI model simply becoming corrupted. In either case, during Star Trek: Deep Space Nine's run, visual effects supervisor David Stipes stated cryptically, "I believe we removed the Norway-class for technical reasons" and the ship was never seen again.
Undeterred by lost or poor quality CGI models, though, Eaglemoss Collections has digitally rebuilt numerous Star Trek starships in the decades since in order to include them in the Official Star Trek Starships Collection line of models. This includes the Akira-class, Steamrunner-class, Saber-class, and the lost and/or corrupted Norway-class.
In fact, some 25 years after making its debut in Star Trek: First Contact, a Steamrunner-class starship recently appeared in the trailer for Star Trek: Picard's upcoming second season, according to Eaglemoss manager Ben Robinson on Twitter, all thanks to Eaglemoss' diligent reconstruction of Star Trek's legacy vessels.
Here's hoping the Norway-class manages to find its way back too.
