Star Trek 3: 3 Reasons A Seasoned Trekkie Should Direct

1. There Are Five Other TOS Films, For Crying Out Loud!

Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan Ricardo Montalban Alright, let's face it. Star Trek II is probably one of the greatest films, let alone science fiction films in cinematic history. It also serves as about 99% of all classic Trek references in the reboot. I mean, come on, Benedict Cumberbatch was Khan himself and arguably, although Ricardo will be forever with whom I associate the name, he was arguably better! Let's go down the list of classic Trek references in the last two films, and feel free to sound off if I miss any. We've got the Centaurian slugs, the Kobayashi Maru, "I'm aware of my responsibilities, Mister," and, let's face it, the entirety of Into Darkness, a list that would be far too long to make here. I mean, even the clips released in the buildup to the release had Khan references galore; any die-hard Trekkie could have picked up who John Harrison really is, other than the helmsman in Space Seed. In the new film, we had a couple of subtle references to Star Trek VI (The already exploded Praxis in orbit around Kronos, Captain Sulu) as well as a reference to Harry Mudd (already explained in the Countdown comics) but that's about it. No loyal Trekkie will argue the significance of The Wrath of Khan, but it's time for J.J. (who is staying on as executive producer) to move on and broaden his horizons toward more than one film. Who knows, maybe a whale is in trouble somewhere? So there you have it, Trekkies; we need a team for the new film that is more familiar to classic lore. I personally nominate Jonathan Frakes for the job. What do you think?
