We all know that Star Trek movies have had something of a varied time over the years. We've had the good, like The Wrath of Khan and The Search For Spock, the funny/silly, as in The Voyage Home and of course the downright awful, thinking here of course of the original Motion Picture (I still wake up some nights shivering about that one!). In the main though, the recent Trek films have been if not great, then mostly good, and with First Contact only two years ago now, I think we all agree the movie franchise finally got it right. At last, the movie was tied in to not only a Next Gen episode, but one of the most important and pivotal ones, The Best Of Both Worlds, and Patrick Stewart gave a thundering performance. So, surely the future must be bright for Trek films. It would certainly seem so, with the new one on the horizon and eagerly awaited, the excellent Deep Space Nine approaching its climactic end and Voyager finally seeming to have found its feet. The world of Star Trek has never looked so bright, and as long as they don't do anything stupid like Star Trek Academy or some godawful prequel to the series, we should be laughing. As indeed should the producers of the current movie, Star Trek Insurrection, the ninth in the franchise but the third to eschew a number before its title. I suppose there needs to be a clear demarcation line between the "older" Trek movies starring Kirk, Spock and McCoy and the original cast, and the newer ones featuring the Next Generation cast. That's fair, but Insurrection is also being spoken of as Star Trek IX: Insurrection. So, will it measure up to the powerhouse that was First Contact? We think the chances are great, and here are five solid reasons why, for this latest stage of "the human adventure", failure is simply neither an option nor a worry...
