Star Trek 50th Anniversary: 10 Things That Must Happen

2. Closure On The Next Generation Universe

Star Trek (2009) may serve as a sequel to every Star Trek story before it - as well as a prequel and reboot - but for many fans, there hasn't been that closure we wanted on the Next Generation universe. Star Trek: Nemesis was criticised rather heavily - not all of it justified - and as a result Picard's crew never got the fitting send off like Kirk's crew did in Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country. The best we had was a four-part comic series Star Trek: Countdown, that involved Spock, Picard, The Enterprise-E and Nero, leading to the destruction of Romulus, and Spock's sacrifice - disappearing back to the timeline established in JJ Abram's reboot. Unfortunately while it may have been an attempt at closure, it wasn't the kind of send off audiences were looking for. Perhaps the 50th anniversary is that chance for some closure. The celebrations would be a unique chance to revisit what has come before without detracting from where the franchise is currently going. It wouldn't necessarily be a cinematic film. Perhaps a three-part mini series involving the Enterprise-E, Riker's ship the Titan, Deep Space Nine and Voyager? Set a number of years after the three TV series and Nemesis, it would be a last hurrah for all the crews, working together (or at least cameos alongside the Enterprise's crew) finishing off the last dangling plot threads from that era. The Borg, the Dominion, Q or even the fate of Romulus. There are many avenues this drama could take to create one satisfying goodbye to Picard, Sisko and Janeway...
