Star Trek 50th Anniversary: 10 Things That Must Happen

5. Star Trek 3 To Be An Original Story

On those failings, Star Trek Into Darkness suffered from trying to go straight for the jugular of the franchise, Star Trek II: The Wrath Of Khan. It didn't have the history of Space Seed to play off and Benedict Cumberbatch - as awesome as he always is - bore no resemblance to Ricardo Montalban's iconic villain. Instead the film should have gone straight for the five year voyage, choosing to create a twist on a classic episode - Where No Man Has Gone Before perhaps - if it truly wanted to play with an alternate twist on an established story. We never saw all of the five year mission in the original show and we have been presented with a galaxy irreversibly changed by Nero's action in the first rebooted film. That gives Robert Orci the opportunity to create something fresh and exciting for the fans. An original story, not hampered by Khan or the Klingons would prove Star Trek can still be fresh now and lead to an expanded franchise. The film can still use established aliens like Romulans, Talosians or Tribbles, but it needs to be an original story. Give us something something unexpected and the next Star Trek film will start to reach the lofty heights of being a great Star Trek film for the 50th anniversary.
