Star Trek Beyond: 10 Things It Did Better Than J.J. Abrams
6. The Level Of Destruction Is Restrained
Lately, movies have become conscious of their own destructive
tendencies. Both Captain America: Civil War and Batman V Superman addressed the
concern directly, and other movies have been following suit, moderating their
depictions of unnecessary carnage and excessive, unfathomable mayhem. With that
said, this mentality has only just started to manifest itself, hence Into
Darkness features some of the most gratuitous, overblown and ludicrous carnage
ever put to film. We’re talking Man of Steel calibre.
Thankfully, Beyond moderates itself. The Enterprise is destroyed towards the start of the movie, but Yorktown isn’t obliterated into a million pieces, and most of the action that takes place on the planet’s surface is restrained, and elegantly done. At no point are buildings ripped from the ground and thrown through the air, and no cities are pulverised into a million tiny pieces for the sake of spectacle.
There are some truly momentous scenes, but the carnage is kept in check, and the heroes do all they can to prevent needless destruction.
