5. The Futurama Music Gag

Obviously, contemporary era music plays a major part in the film's gloriously silly pay off. Having seeded the Franklin's musical capabilities with Public Enemy's "Fight The Power", the crew later realise that they can use music to disrupt Krall's swarm, choosing The Beastie Boys' "Sabotage".

Kirk's acknowledgement that it's a "good choice" of course calls back to the song's appearance in the first Star Trek (when he steals a car). But even better, the line asking whether the song is "classical" is definitely a riff on a Futurama gag:

There's no way that's a coincidence.
