Star Trek: First Contact - 5 Things That Worked And 5 That Didn't

1. Picard/Patrick Stewart

Ag1 Speaking of Picard, Patrick Stewart was never finer as him than he was in First Contact. Some purists may argue that this portrayal of Picard was antithetical to the more cerebral version shown throughout the run of TNG - attempting to turn Picard into an action hero or another version of James T. Kirk - but I counter that with the fact that the filmmakers of Generations felt content to let him uncharacteristically get his ass handed to him by Malcom McDowell just to make an overweight, past his prime Shatner look good for his last hurrah. First Contact allowed Picard to shine and come into his own as the next film captain of the Enterprise, and Stewart held nothing back. His impassioned speech to Lily in the Observation Lounge, initially lying to himself that his actions haven't been driven by revenge before realizing they most certainly have, is one I never tire of watching and is a tour de force by Stewart. I love Shatner for what he is, but he could never pull off a speech like that - even his hatred of the Klingons in Star Trek VI for killing his son comes off stilted compared to this. One of the utter shames of the Abram's reboot is that it is very unlikely we will ever see Patrick Stewart don the mantle of Captain Jean-Luc Picard again; at least we'll always have First Contact.
