Star Trek Into Darkness: 10 Great Things (And 10 Not So Great Things)
2. This Timeline's Khan
Listen, I'm not knocking anything about Cumberbatch's Khan, the man turned in a sheering performance and will go down as one of the finest and toughest baddies in Star Trek films. It's just not Ricardo Montalban, that's all. The man owns the role, and this isn't some favoritism either. Look Montalban's Khan went out bleeding, bruised, crippled, losing all his closest friends and colleagues right in front of his own eyes... and he just keeps going right to the last second. He feels all of it... he just doesn't care about the pain or anguish, he pushes it all aside because all that he is IS vengeance against Kirk and the Enterprise. Cumberbatch Khan on the other hand, seemingly just doesn't feel physical pain and he regenerates like Wolverine, he doesn't even need oxygen apparently. They made Khan superman basically, while with the older version, sure he had an I.Q off the charts and abnormal strength, but you could see the humanity within. The pure unfiltered hatred and malice in him, oh yes, he was all-too-human. That is what has made Khan one of the most endearing and enduring villains in Sci-Fi history, his humanity with inhuman resolve, not just Ricardo's abnormal age-defying pecs.
