1. Who's "Next?"
One of the best things about this franchise is that there were so many different series that took place in the world. While
The Original Series is undoubtedly the most iconic, a very close second would be
The Next Generation, which spawned 178 episodes (longer than any other
Trek TV show) and 4 feature films. Let's say
Star Trek 3 is the last film to feature Kirk, Spock and the rest of their crew (the cast did sign on for two sequels). What's to stop Paramount from rebooting
The Next Generation for a new generation? They did recast Captain Kirk and Mister Spock, so it's certainly in the realm of possibility and I doubt many eyebrows would be raised. Given Bad Robot's track record so far, I think most people would be confident in their ability to find a new Jean Luc-Picard. However you look at it, the decision to move forward with
Next Generation would be highly logical. Not only would the studio be able to keep the brand name out in the public eye, they'd also be able to continue the new franchise with a new cast of characters and stories to care about, keeping the movies fresh (as opposed to waiting a few years and rebooting
The Original Series again, which would upset fans). Since the 2009
Star Trek was my real introduction to the series, I'm unfortunately extremely unfamiliar with
The Next Generation. Still, the possibility of this is exciting and
I'm not the only one who's thought about it. As long as Paramount and Bad Robot found enthusiastic, talented people to work in front of and behind the camera, the franchise could continue to live long and prosper.
What do you think? Who should direct Star Trek 3
? Should The Next Generation
get the reboot treatment? Let us know in the comments!
