3. Demographics
Most action/adventure films generally skew towards male audiences. That's the target demographic. That's who the trailers are aimed at. It shouldn't come as any surprise that
Star Trek Into Darkness was predominantly seen by guys. On opening weekend, the audience was 64% male. What is a little surprising is that the first film was able to draw more females in (the audience for
Star Trek was 60% male). What caused the shift?
Playing off my last point, the competition probably played some part in this.
The Great Gatsby is a movie that appeals to female moviegoers more than a sci-fi flick, no matter how entertaining the latter is. DiCaprio's romantic drama was dominated by female audiences during its opening weekend from May 10-12 (59%) and it probably didn't drop that much during its second week. It undoubtedly is the best available option currently that's "date night friendly" and probably stole some boyfriends and husbands treating their significant other to a night out at the movies. Women not showing any interest in a
Star Trek film is one thing. But this next point should definitely raise some eyebrows...
