Star Trek Into Darkness: 6 Flaws That Almost Ruined It

4. The Humour

Chekov There is something of an inconsistency in the tone of the film: this is not the gleeful romp that the first one was, but like Iron Man 3, the scripters seem overly keen to shoe-horn in as much comedy as possible despite an agenda to make things darker. So while worlds fall apart, and hearts burst into flame, we are treated to a Bones McCoy reduced entirely to metaphors and quips (he should be SO much more,) a bumbling Scottie with a comedy side-kick in tow, and a Chekov who feels way too much like a taller version of self-abusing house-elf Dobby from Harry Potter. There is too much humour by far, and too many characters burdened with bringing smiles in place of them being given any actual development. Even Michael Bay knows you should only have one comic relief character, and too many clowns will ruin anything that aspires to be as tragic (in parts) as Into Darkness does.
