7. He Let Other People Play With His Toys
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=akeYJwd4o2M Im not talking about all the innovations he developed to make his movies (well talk about that next). Im talking about the fact that he wasnt precious about others building on the universe he created. We all know Timothy Zahn reinvigorated Star Wars with The Thrawn trilogy, and since then the extended universe hasnt slowed down. You can tell from interviews with Lucas that everything in the extended universe isnt necessarily his cup of tea, but hes cool with it, because he recognized that without the help of others he wouldnt be able to maintain a rabid fan base, one that would allow him to make more Star Wars content. I would say the ultimate expression of his genius, in this regard, was selling LucasFilm to Disney. I agree with Lucas. Based on their recent track recor,d there was no better company to sell his baby to. Disney understands the value of franchises and more importantly they know how to manage them. With Pixar and Marvel, Disney lets the creatives be creative and hasn't interfered too much (Disney, please dont change a thing).
