Located in the desolate Outer Rim of the galaxy, far from the Galactic Core, Tatooine was once a world of lush rainforests and oceans, but an unknown catastrophe turned the world into a hot, sandy, desert planet. Because of the harsh environment, only certain areas can sustain vegetation. The landscape is covered with canyons, dunes, and mountains, making travel difficult at best. Due to the lack of moisture in the ground, the inhabitants are forced to draw it from the air.

Rain is extremely rare on Tatooine, but the cities and settlements are frequently blasted with severe sandstorms. There are few cities throughout the planet that are separated by vast expanses of desert. Throughout the desert area are moisture farms that harvest water and grow small amounts of food to support the meagre lifestyles on this financially poor planet.

The only people making sufficient money on Tatooine are the criminals. Despite its remote location, the planet is located near key hyperspace routes, making it a mecca for the smugglers, gangsters, scum, and villains that filled some of the planet's larger and more decadent cities. Under Hutt rule, everything is available and everything and nearly everyone is for sale. It’s just a matter of price.
