9. George Lucas Clashed With Director Richard Marquand Throughout Filming

Though Lucas hand-selected Richard Marquand to direct Return of the Jedi, the pair reportedly clashed during shooting, in large part because Lucas favoured extensive camera coverage while Marquand, coming from a lower-budget realm of filmmaking, preferred just one or two cameras.

It's been alleged by several people connected to the production, including The Empire Strikes Back's director Irvin Kershner, that Marquand didn't direct all of the film, and significant portions of it were in fact helmed by an assistant director and even Lucas himself, due to some cast members struggling to work with Marquand.

Darth Vader's climactic cremation, for example, has been confirmed to have been filmed by Lucas himself.

Though Lucas has generally commended Marquand as a capable director, Marquand himself said of shooting the film with Lucas' constant presence on-set, "It is rather like trying to direct King Lear with Shakespeare in the next room!"
