Star Wars: 20 Things You Didn't Know About The Empire Strikes Back
1. David Prowse Guessed The Darth Vader Twist Two Years Before Release
There's another piece of mythic Star Wars trivia which, while rooted in truth, has been totally misrepresented over the years.
It's often stated that Darth Vader actor David Prowse spoiled the ending to Empire Strikes Back in a 1978 interview, where he mentioned that Luke would turn out to be Darth Vader's son.
While Prowse's loose-lipped confession has often been spoken as fact, it's actually far more likely that Prowse simply made a lucky guess, given that only George Lucas, Irvin Kershner, Lawrence Kasdan, and Mark Hamill actually knew about the reveal until the late stages of production when James Earl Jones was brought in to provide his voiceover.
Furthermore, Prowse was given a dummy line while shooting the scene - "Obi-Wan killed your father."
Ultimately all that secrecy was pretty much for nought, though, given that the film's novelisation was released a month before the actual movie, spoiling the big twist far ahead of time regardless.
