Star Wars: 50 Greatest Moments - Ranked

21. The Imperial March (The Empire Strikes Back)

Think back to the first Star Wars movie, and any scene where Darth Vader appears. If your head is anything like mine, it automatically fills the scene with the Imperial March, so synonymous are those ominous tones with Vader and the Dark Side.

What's often surprising to remember is that the music, which is among the most iconic themes John Williams has ever created, doesn't actually appear in the saga until The Empire Strikes Back - that's how powerful it is, and how perfectly it captures the spirit of evil.

Its first use is brilliant, from the Star Destroyer to the shot of the back of Vader's helmet and the heavy breathing. It instantly fills you with a sense of dread and foreboding, immediately becoming as intrinsic to the Dark Side as red lightsabers.
