44. Yoda’s Return (The Last Jedi)

Fans may have thought they’d seen the last of the Yoda after the Return of the Jedi (chronologically speaking), but he makes a crucial return in The Last Jedi to remind us all of why the puppet became such a popular supporting figure in Star Wars.

Brilliantly directed by Frank Oz, and importantly using a puppet rather than CGI, it’s a crowd-pleasing moment from the second we spot the back of the Jedi Master’s head in silhouette.

From there we get a scene that includes plenty of his trademark humour, but also a lovely yet slightly sad chat with Luke, two masters who have experienced failure and speak straight to the heart of both the past and the future.

NCTJ-qualified journalist. Most definitely not a racing driver. Drink too much tea; eat too much peanut butter; watch too much TV. Sadly only the latter paying off so far. A mix of wise-old man in a young man's body with a child-like wonder about him and a great otherworldly sensibility.
