Star Wars: 8 Ways The Last Jedi Says F**k You To J.J. Abrams
2. Losing - And Insulting - Kylo's Visual Design
Kylo Ren's entire design connotes the Sith Lords of old, yet has enough of an identity to be immediately recognisable - not to mention it was embraced and championed by the fanbase. The underlying sentiment was somewhat meant to be an amateurish "tribute"/copycat of Vader, but did we really need Snoke calling Kylo's mask "stupid"?
Imagine being the person who designed Kylo Ren. You've got the weight of the world on your shoulders, the expectation of billions - the knowledge that whatever you do will be criticised six ways from Sunday... and you manage to pull it off. Then the same character who later calls Kylo the "Son of Darkness" - which really sounds badass... - flips everything on its head, essentially showing that the helmet and Kylo in general aren't taken seriously amongst the upper ranks.
Forget all the fans vicariously living out their Vader-worshipping ways through Kylo, warts n' all. Now we have a maskless Ren who looks more "normal", and admittedly less iconic than someone like Darth Vader, or even Darth Maul, if we're talking about great cinematic villains.
AGAIN, you can argue, "Well, that's the point, villains don't always look evil" and/or "Do you really want another masked Sith Lord?", and sure... but this is still Star Wars. Did Rian Johnson really have to kick Kylo and his fans down quite so much?
