Star Wars Episode 7: 10 Things To Avoid

3. Droid Battles

Somewhat tied into the above complaint about overt CGI, can we please not have anymore bland, soulless droid battles? The problem, as with many similar films, is that the viewer is denied agency by simply watching two blatantly artificial creations do battle against what is also obviously a 100% CGI set. It gets boring and wearisome after a few moments, and the fact that Lucas peppers so many of them throughout the new trilogy is troubling, especially when compounded by the mundane trade dialogues and so on; it reminds us how much filler populates these newer films. While we're not suggesting that Lucas go for practical effects - because, realistically, it won't work and will cost billions - why not at least make some real sets, or better yet, have more humans doing the fighting? Or talk to James Cameron and get him to whip up some machines that actually look convincing. Either way, this is not an animated film, so please populate the screen with some actual human life every once in a while if you want us to get viscerally involved in the action.
