Star Wars: Episode VIII - 8 Things That Definitely Shouldn't Happen
8. The Plot To Pick Up Right Where Episode VII Left Off
Here's a curious thing: the production announcement for Episode VIII showed Rian Johnson and his crew re-shooting the scene from the end of Star Wars: The Force Awakens earlier in the year, in which Daisy Ridley's Rey could be seen extending a lightsaber to Mark Hamill's Luke Skywalker. Episode VII cut to the credits on that now iconic moment, of course. But what gives? Why go back to reshoot this scene - or an extension of this scene - unless Episode VIII was intended to start at that moment? Traditionally, of course, Star Wars movies began a few years - or at least a few months - after the events of the previous film. It'd be weird for Episode VIII to pick things up at the very moment that The Force Awakens left off; that's just not Star Wars. There has to be a jump in time - it's what creates the suspense, as you try to bridge the gap between events. If Episode VIII starts with the lightsaber scene, what the hell will the Opening Crawl say? Hopefully there's a reasonable explanation for this, but fingers crossed that it doesn't involve he storyline picking up at the moment Episode VII ended.
